Your Total Guide To business

Bristol Lives: Liz Gadd

Having worked in recruitment, training and business development for just over 25 years, Liz had plenty to discuss when we sat down to quiz her about living and working in Bristol.

Where is home and why?

Portishead, because living on the marina is special, the town has some great facilities, it’s easy to get to everywhere, and there are plenty of amazing walks on my doorstep.

What inspired you to set up your business in Bristol?

Ever since the age of 11, when I started high school in Clifton, Bristol, I have been fascinated by Bristol and its diversity, culture, style and energy.

What are your professional goals?

Helping brilliant people get what they want from their careers and achieving their goals, wishes and dreams.  Encouraging young people to really go for what they want and giving them the career advice and guidance they need to get there.

Did anyone try to discourage you from setting up your own business?

No one at all, I am very ambitious and have been from an early age.  Most people said “about time” or “we were wondering when you were going to take the plunge”.

What advice would you give anyone looking to do the same?

Get a good lawyer, a great accountant and a splendid mentor, and then listen to what they say. Focus on what your skill is and let the others focus on theirs.  Don’t be all things to all men at all times!  And TAKE TIME OFF when you can…everyone needs a break!

What do you think attracts business people to Bristol?

Talent, commercial opportunities, the diversity of the city, its proximity to coast and country, and its trading history of excellence.

If you could do it all again, would you do anything differently?

I would do lots of things differently of course, that’s the beauty of hindsight.  However, there are some things that I would do exactly the same all over again.

I’d still delight in every new client, new contact, new connection and start with “how can I help you?”.  I’d still encourage an independent, educational, innovative team environment and let people learn and grow in an encouraging, supportive way.  I’d still be honest, transparent and daring.  And I’d still want to look back and think “I’m glad I did that, I learnt some stuff and I’m happy about that”.

How do you like to spend your time off?

With my amazing daughter Polly who has been my “why” since the day she was born and never fails to amaze me with her kindness, generosity, sassiness and humour…she’s a brilliant person. And walking my ever changing pack of dogs…currently just one cocker spaniel with a new puppy or two arriving in January.

Your phone book must be full of business contacts, but who is the most famous person in there?

What has been your greatest achievement to date?

Motherhood…it changed my life forever and I’m very grateful that I was given the chance to be a mum.  I’m really not sure I’ve always been the best mum in the world, but I’ve tried!  I have my own mum to thank for the guidance, as a role model…she is the absolute best.

And my “network” – full of my amazing family and friends (both business and personal) who have undoubtedly made me the person I am today, good and bad!
