Thrings Advise Britain’s First Female Head Cutter on Return to Savile Row
Leading commercial law firm Thrings has provided commercial property advice to world-renowned tailor and Britain’s first female head cutter, Kathryn Sargent, on the opening of her first store on Savile Row.
The letting of the 854 sq ft premises at 37 Savile Row – which opened on 6 April as a spring and summer seasonal residency – sees Kathryn become the first female master tailor to launch a new store on the famous Mayfair street in its 350-year history.
It also marks a return to Savile Row for Kathryn, who trained and worked at the premises of celebrated men’s tailors Gieves and Hawkes for 15 years, becoming the first female head cutter in the history of Savile Row in 2009.
Legal advice was provided by Alison Jarvis, commercial property partner at Thrings, who enabled Kathryn Sargent to meet a demanding timetable to sign up for – and secure – the store. The store concept was created by design architects, Tanner Design.
Kathryn Sargent formed her eponymously named business in 2012, quickly gaining an outstanding reputation for designing, cutting and making high-quality, handcrafted, British-infused tailored suits, contemporary pieces and uniforms for men and women.
Kathryn said: “I am delighted to be opening a shop on Savile Row. As a tailor it has been a long held ambition of mine, and throughout my career, I have upheld the excellent values of Savile Row. I am thrilled to be making history, although for me being a woman is incidental, I am a tailor first and foremost.
“Alison Jarvis and the team at Thrings were extremely efficient and helpful with providing all the legal advice and assistance required, and went over and above to ensure the deadlines were met."
Alison Jarvis added: “Savile Row is a shopping destination of international renown, with a history steeped in providing traditional, bespoke and high-quality tailored clothing. The street is already home to many notable tailors, and Kathryn’s arrival will further enhance its reputation for fashion retail excellence. Thrings is very pleased to have helped Kathryn reinforce her own status as a world-leading tailor in such a prestigious location.”
