Clifton Rocks Railway
Their aim is to advance the education of the public through the preservation and restoration of the Clifton Rocks Railway.
Thousands of people pass the bottom entrance to the Clifton Rocks Railway as they drive along Bristol's Portway, with most not knowing what secret is buried in the rock of Avon Gorge!
The Clifton Rocks Railway was a major engineering achievement in the 1890s and operated for 40 years, transporting people from Hotwells Road to Clifton in passenger cars running in a tunnel in the Avon gorge on steeply inclined tracks.
A group has now been formed to establish a company as a charity to raise the money needed for feasibility studies initially and then whatever the amount required for the restoration of this forgotten sight thereafter.
The Clifton Rocks Railway Trust has been formed by a group of volunteers to restore the Railway.
Supported by the Avon Gorge Hotel, Bristol City Council and sponsored by a number of local companies, the Trust is working hard to restore elements of the railway.
