Best casino movies
- Molly’s Game (2017)
Usually, casino movies are very male driven and contain next to no female characters. However, Molly’s Game is different. Playing the protagonist Molly is the ever incredible Jessica Chastain whose repertoire includes Zero Dark Thirty and Interstellar.
This movie is based on a true story about Molly Bloom and how she ended up being the target of the FBI. Molly was originally an Olympic skier but had to give it up due to a career ending injury. She then ended up as a waitress at a club in Los Angeles where she took up an interest in poker.
She ends up setting up her own poker business, but things start to go downhill fast. This is a movie with a fast pace with a great cast. The added interesting factor in this movie is that it is based on true events, which makes it all the more gripping.
It’s got a 7.4/10 on IMDB and a massive 82% on Rotten Tomatoes making it a must watch.
- Casino Royale (2006)
How could we have a list of casino movies without mentioning this classic? Casino Royale is one in a very long, long line of James Bond films but it is arguably one of the best. Daniel Craig is our Bond in this part of the movie series and it’s his first playing the role. Talk about getting off to a flying start!
As ever, Bond must catch the villain who is played this time round by Mads Mikkelsen. Mikkelsen is renowned for playing the bad guy and he never disappoints. To defeat Le Chiffre (Mikkelsen), Bond must play a poker game in Montenegro. In true James Bond style, the film builds palpable tension before reaching its climax.
This film gets a whopping 8/10 on IMDB and a revolutionary 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. If you’re looking for a classic casino film to enjoy, you’ve just found it.
- 21 (2008)
If you’re not in the mood for something as serious, 21 is definitely your movie. It’s based on the true, but almost definitely exaggerated, story by Ben Mezrich about a college Blackjack Team and their escapades.
They train themselves to become expert card counters and take their scam to the casino tables of Las Vegas to make their fortune. It’s got a stellar cast including stars such as Kate Bosworth and Laurence Fishburne which means you know that the acting is top of the class.
This film doesn’t do too well in the ratings, only achieving a 6.8/10 on IMDB but it’s a great film if you’re looking for something a little more lighthearted and fun.
- Ocean’s Eleven (2001)
Ocean’s Eleven is one of the most famous casino films out there – and there’s a good reason for that. A star studded cast including George Clooney, Matt Damon and Brad Pitt earn their titles as some of the best actors in the business.
In the movie, Danny Ocean (Clooney) plans to take his pals to Las Vegas and scam his rival by planning to steal money from the three casinos he owns. This American heist film is so popular that it got another two movies in the same franchise. Then, some years later, the franchise was given a revamp with an all female cast in Ocean’s Eight.
This film gets a great 7.7/10 on IMDB as well as an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics love it so we’re sure that you will too.
- Uncut Gems (2019)
Uncut Gems is a film that will get your heart racing as well as pulling at its strings. It’s a tale of a jewel dealer who decides to make the bet of a lifetime. He puts everything on the line – his job, his family and his friends to make this bet leading to a high paced and tense movie.
Adam Sandler plays the protagonist but it’s unlike you’ve ever seen him before. Sure, he’s still a bit goofy and is cracking jokes but the film takes a more serious turn than anything he’s been in previously.
This film is a hit with the critics too. IMDB gives it a reasonable 7.4/10 but Rotten Tomatoes is better pleased and gives it a huge 91% rating. Give this film a go and you won’t be disappointed.
Whether you’re a fan of casinos, land based or online, or just love a high paced drama, these films are guaranteed to keep you entertained. There are scams, high stakes and enough drama to keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time. Now the only thing left to do is to get the popcorn ready!
