Review: The John Wilson Orchestra

TGtB's resident culture vulture, Patricia Ledger reviews The John Wilson Orchestra.

I enjoyed a memorable evening at The Colston Hall watching and listening to The John Wilson Orchestra performing Cole Porter music and songs from the golden days of Hollywood musicals.

A packed audience listened with rapt attention to the stunning versions of much loved Cole Porter classics and the introduction to some music we may have not heard before - a case in point being `The Pirate Ballet` from the 1948 Judy Garland/Gene Kelly movie The Pirate - what a fantastic piece of music this was.

The orchestral scores for the MGM musicals of the Golden Age of Hollywood from the Twenties to the Fifties were discarded but John Wilson has painstakingly and meticulously recreated the scores of Cole Porter classics for us all to enjoy

The Orchestra, as ever, was outstanding and the soloists marvellous. John Wilson is a mesmeric and charismatic conductor (quite a pin-up among the young ladies as well, I might add.)

His brilliance at recreating the scores and bringing together these world class talented musicians and singers is an occasion not to be missed - The Tour continues nationwide until 25th November culminating at The Royal Albert Hall - catch it if you can - we can guarantee an unforgettable evening.
