Expert Dental Tips To Have a Smile That's Always in Style

Have you ever been that person who got the latest stylish haircut, only to find that it was out of fashion the next week?

That's frustrating but, when it comes to style and looking great, there are a few things that are permanent: clear skin and straight, clean and white teeth.

So, if you want to ensure that (at least) your smile is on trend to always look great, follow the tips listed below.

Get an Electric Toothbrush

Starting with the basics, one way to get your smile looking its best is to opt for an electric toothbrush. Manual brushing is generally considered to be ineffective compared to using an electric toothbrush, and the majority of dental surgeries, like Direct Dental, will advise their patients to use an electric toothbrush with a rotating brush head to remove stains from difficult areas. This will help to keep your teeth bright and white, and will also remove plaque to prevent decay.

Use Whitening Strips or Get Professional Whitening

If you have always wanted to have a brighter, whiter smile, there are a few options available to you. Many people opt for at home whitening strips, which can help to remove surface stains from the tooth but need to be applied with care and precision, or you may accidentally end up burning your gum tissue, which is very unpleasant! If you have tried whitening strips and have found nothing came from the process, you can talk to your dentist about getting professional whitening, which occurs in surgery and can brighten your teeth by up to 18 shades.

Drink More Water

There is a lot to be said about drinking more water from a health perspective, but when it comes to oral health, this is often overlooked. One reason to up your water intake is because it stimulates saliva production in the mouth. Saliva helps to reduce food debris and plaque, which can lead to cavities, decay and generally just looks bad if it isn't removed! So, up your water intake to remove plaque and to also bolster the whiteness of your enamel.

Opt For Tooth Coloured Fillings

Many people who had fillings or crowns fitted in the 1990s will likely have what are known as amalgam or metal fillings. These are indeed very sturdy, but visually, they can be quite distracting to look at as they are often black, silver or even green in appearance. So, when going to get a style-worthy smile, ask your cosmetic dentist to swap the amalgam options for composite or tooth-colored options to create a more aesthetically pleasing result. Oh, and composite fillings don't react to heat the same way that amalgam ones do, which can also preserve the structure of the tooth.

Straighten Your Teeth

Last but certainly not least, if you have a smile that is slightly misaligned, has spacing, or is crowded, it can be worth looking in to having your teeth straightened. In 2024, there are many options that will enable you to do this with minimal effort, which include options like invisible aligners or Invisalign, as well as ceramic braces and lingual braces. Of course, the options available will depend on the severity of the misalignment, so be sure to talk to your dentist or orthodontist about which is best for you.
