Let's Talk
How to Travel Responsibly
Many of us are rapidly searching the internet, looking at beautiful holiday destinations all over the world, but are we thinking about how our holiday choice may impact the planet too? There’s no denying that after a bleak two years, a holiday is on the cards for many who are looking to relax and explore. With environmental issues also at the forefront of many discussions, jetting off on holiday might seem a negative idea when it comes to being more eco-friendly. However, there are many things you can do to help reduce your environmental impact whilst travelling.
In this article, we will discuss a few.
What is Responsible Travel?
Responsible travel is being aware of the impacts you are having on the places you are travelling to; socially, culturally and environmentally. By travelling responsibly, you are aiming to minimise the negative effects that travel can have, whilst maximising the positives.
Being aware of the impacts travel can have is the first step to becoming more responsible.
Things to Consider
Tours
Planning a holiday, especially to a far-flung location, can be quite stressful. Choosing a tour operator is a good way of having everything organised for you, however, it can be quite daunting knowing where to look. Choosing a tour operator who puts responsible travel at the forefront of their company values is a good indicator that the tour you choose will be giving back to the environment and the local community. Adventure holiday specialists, Exodus Travels, have recently been awarded the Sustainability Champion Award at the 2022 Which? Awards,?which recognises the work Exodus is continuing to do to engage in sustainable travel; pledging to become nature net positive by 2024.
Mode of Transport
Start by considering the journey.
- How much time do you have?
- What is the distance?
- Is it over land?
If you have a large amount of time and are exploring Europe from the UK, for example, then considering train travel instead of an aeroplane will reduce your environmental impact significantly. However, if you are travelling across the Atlantic from the UK to the USA, then flying might be your only option. Although there are still ways to reduce the impact, such as getting a direct flight, opting for a more efficient aircraft and looking into carbon offsetting.
Reducing Plastic
Plastic is a major problem across the world, with an estimated 12 million tons of plastic entering the ocean each year. The growing plastic crisis is causing marine life to suffer. As individuals, we can help to minimise our plastic waste both at home and whilst travelling. To do this, we need to eliminate single-use plastic from our routines. Using a reusable water bottle whilst away from home, and carrying a tote bag for shopping, are good places to start.
Enjoy Sustainable Activities Which Give Back to the Local Community
Whist on holiday many of us choose to partake in additional activities. Choosing less impactful activities like kayaking, biking or hiking will not only allow you to see amazing scenery but produce zero carbon too – a win-win. Also, by opting to visit locally run places instead of international chains you are supporting the local community and economy.
There are many ways to travel responsibly and practising the methods above will help you in the right direction, wherever your wanderlust takes you.
