Park Street to be Transformed into A Pop Up Park

On Sunday 1st June, Park Street in Bristol will be closed to traffic to be turned into a pop up park.

An initiative from the Park Street Traders committee, the landmark street will transform from a commuter thoroughfare into a green space, with everything from artificial grass to trees to create the urban park.

With support from the award-winning artificial grass company easigrass’s Bristol and Bath franchise, Verde Recreo Ltd, this famed Bristol street will be transformed into a safe, easi-green-covered area where the public can come and relax, eat, drink and shop.

The day will be full of activities and entertainment, with traders showcasing to the public and highlighting the diversity that Park Street has to offer. There will also be an entertainment stage at the bottom of the street near College Green hosting music, dance displays, food demonstrations and comedy acts. The event will coincide with the second of Bristol City Council's 2014 Make Sunday Special events.

The event idea came from the traders committee who felt that the street had become slightly unloved and wanted to create an event that would attract people to linger on Park Street.

Nadia Abdulla, who heads up the event committee, says “Park Street is no longer a destination point for a lot of Bristolians and although many of us travel up and down it a lot, we don’t tend to stop to shop, eat or drink here as we used to. We hope that by bringing a bit of Brandon Hill to Park Street we can remind people of what a diverse, beautiful and historical street we have and that this event will be the first of many to help encourage people back and to stay for longer.”

Mayor George Ferguson is getting behind the project saying: “A Park on Park St? I’m delighted to see local retailers embracing the sentiment of opening our streets up for people and thank Park Street Traders for coming up with this great idea."
