Sailing success for Bristol's Youth: New Horizons Project makes waves

The New Horizons Project is set to make a triumphant return to Bristol for its third year, bringing the thrill of sailing to underprivileged youth and equipping them with valuable life skills.

Part of the Royal Yachting Association’s (RYA) national campaign, Together on Water, this initiative aims to empower young people aged 10 to 20 by introducing them to the unique world of sailing.

The project is designed to make water sports accessible to those who may not typically have the opportunity, offering subsidised and free sailing experiences in the Bristol area. Building on previous successes, New Horizons has engaged local groups like Black2Nature and DET Entertainment, which have praised the project’s positive impact on the community.

18 participants who began with introductory sailing sessions have already achieved stage 1 certification, with 10 advancing to stage 2. Beyond the technical skills of sailing, the project fosters personal growth, teaching participants critical skills such as leadership, time management, and perseverance.

The New Horizons Project doesn’t just teach sailing; it opens doors to unexpected career opportunities in the travel, leisure, and maritime industries worldwide. By giving Bristol’s youth a chance to learn on the water, the project is helping to shape a new generation of confident, skilled individuals ready to navigate their futures.
